Barbara Woodhouse Williams

Barbara passed away on May 18, 2009. She was having lunch with her husband Neil at a restaurant in Columbus when her legs and arms became numb. She was taken by ambulance to the hospital and died soon after of an aortic aneurysm. The obituary below was published in the Springfield News-Sun.

Barbara W. Williams, 70, of South Vienna went to be with the Lord on Monday, May 18, 2009 in Mt. Carmel Hospital, Columbus. She was born in South Vienna, Ohio on April 3, 1939, the daughter of Robert W. and Mable M. (Kohl) Woodhouse. She was a 1957 graduate of Northeastern High School. Barbara was a member of The Potters House Church of God, Columbus, and was very active in church and loved to travel. She was a very loving wife, mother, and grandmother. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents. Her survivors include her husband, Neil F. Williams, whom she married November 28, 1976, two sisters Ruth Ann (George) Ball of Medway, Linda (Jack) Mason of Colorado Springs, CO, one son Dirk (Diane) Smith of Houston, TX, stepsons Ted (Tanya) Williams of South Charleston, Stephen (Michelle) Williams of FL, stepdaughter Tonya (Mark) Schmunk of South Charleston, nine grandchildren Rebekah, Adam, Loren, Branden, Andrew, Anthony, Amanda, Elizabeth, and Chloe. Family and friends may call Thursday from 5-8 PM in the Richards, Raff & Dunbar Memorial Home. A celebration of Barbara's life will be at 11:00 AM Friday in The Potters House, 3220 Lowell Drive, Columbus with Pastor Tim Oldfield officiating. Burial to follow in Ferncliff Cemetery. More Sad News - David Wykoff

I received a message from Nancy Wykoff with the sad news that her husband and our classmate David passed away on July 1. Nancy included David's obituary in her message, which I am posting here.

David Noel Wykoff, 68 of Ripley, Ohio passed away at Brown County Hospital July 1, 2008. He was born in Springfield, Ohio to Dwight and Dale Wykoff. David retired from Navistar International, Springfield, Ohio after 30 years and worked for Aberdeen Express in Aberdeen, Ohio after his retirement.

He was a custom painter of motorcycles, cars, trucks and Funny Race Cars. He painted the "Muscular Dystrophy Funny Car Of The Year" that was displayed throughout the US and won many awards. He painted for Harley Davidson. His custom paint and fabrication on the Stroh's Harley Davidson Bike won many awards including "Best Of The Show" in Columbus, Ohio where one of his competitors was "The Egyptian" of Dayton, Ohio.

Dave is survived by his wife of 37 years Nancy , his son Scott David of Ripley, Ohio, a daughter Deborah Nance of Sardinia, Ohio, sisters Shirley Griffitts, Patricia Miller, his brother Jack Wykoff all of Springfield, Ohio, and 4 wonderful grandchildren. He is also survived by a very special and dear aunt, Doris Lucas of Manchester, Ohio, whom he loved very much.

Dave was a member of the Eagles FOE Aerie 1564 of Maysville, Kentucky and a Kentucky Colonel.

I was recently informed of the death of one of our classmates - John LaPolt. I was able to access John's obituary on the website of the Greeneville (TN) Sun. It seems that John was a man of many accomplishments. I believe that many of you may be interested in reading about John's life, so I am posting a copy of the obituary here in the class blog. John Robert LaPolt

John Robert LaPolt, 68, of Greeneville, died Wednesday, September 3, 2008 at his home. Mr. LaPolt was born in Monticello, N.Y., and grew up in Springfield, Ohio, where he played numerous high school sports. His family moved to Wilmington, Del., where he worked as a laboratory technician at Avisun Corp. in nearby New Castle. During that time, his family said, he helped his widowed mother raise his youngest brother. He attended Wilmington College and in 1966 married Bernice Darsney, a co-worker at Avisun.

The family continued: "[He] became a self-taught expert in the plastics and colorants field and worked for some of the industry's biggest companies: Amoco in New Castle; Berwick Industries in Berwick, Pa.; and CPS industries in Franklin, Tenn. "[He] moved his family to Greeneville in 1979, when he took a job as extrusion manager at Plus Mark-American Greetings, and retired nearly two decades later as the company's ink specialist. "When he was in good health, [Mr. LaPolt] was an active member of Notre Dame Catholic Church and served as a Eucharistic minister. He was involved in the Knights of Columbus 6784, in which he served as financial secretary.

"His interests included watching historical documentaries, following University of Tennessee football, fixing automobiles, and spending time with his children and grandchildren. [His] family was the highlight of his life."

Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Bernice Darsney LaPolt; daughters and sons-in-law Alisa and Chris Snow of Tallahassee, Fla.; Mary and Scott Wood of Atlanta, Ga.; a son, James Garrett LaPolt of Orlando, Fla.; daughter Carrie LaPolt Harris of Greeneville; grand-children Hannah and Emily Wood of Atlanta, Ga.; Gavin and Kendyl Cate of Greeneville; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Sunday at Doughty-Stevens Funeral Home. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Notre Dame Catholic Church. The Revs. John Appian, Charles Burton and William Casey will officiate.

He was preceded in death by his father, William Stanley LaPolt, his mother Margaret Lewis LaPolt; and three brothers, William, Thomas and Richard LaPolt. Members of the Knights of Columbus will serve as honorary pallbearers. Friends and family are invited to attend. Interment will be private.

The family requests that those wishing to make memorial gifts direct them to the American Heart Association and the Notre Dame Catholic Church Building Fund.

Reunion Photos Coming Soon!

Last week's reunion was very enjoyable, with many old acquaintances being renewed after a few years (in some cases) or after many years (in other cases). Lynn and I took a number of pictures at the Friday Class of '57 event, and I plan to post them online in the near future for all to enjoy. Unfortunately I was too busy visiting at the Saturday event with the classes of 1953-1959, and the camera was out of sight and out of mind for most of the evening. We currently are entertaining some out-of-town guests, but after they go home early next week, I'll get the reunion pictures posted and will tell everyone how to access them.

Carol Mercer and the reunion committee have sent out the registration forms for our two big events - the Class of '57 dinner at Locust Hills Golf Club on Friday, September 14 and the Classes of the Fifties dinner (with our class being honored) at Northeastern High School on Saturday, September 15. Get out your checkbook now, fill in those forms, and drop them in the mail! Let's have a big turnout for the reunion events! Carol has asked that separate checks be written for the two events to make bookkeeping easier.

If you read Anita's bio here you will recall that she mentioned the Statler Brothers' song "Class of '57" and the line "playing the organ at the Presbyterian Church." I did a little scouting around on the Internet with Google and discovered that the Marietta (Ohio) High School Class of '57, which is holding its 50th reunion in October, actually has that song on their website. Joann Gremler Riley

In 1958 I married Jim Riley, the love of my life and we are still married. I was engaged to him in my senior year. I was working at Hart Jewelry when school ended and continued there for several years until going to work as Secretary for the Boy Scouts of America for Clark, Greene and Champaign Counties. From there I retired to the tune of "stay at home" Mom and Secretary for my husband at Riley's Asphalt Paving Service. We owned and operated our Company for 30 years. Retiring four years ago, we now live 6 months in Ohio and 6 months in Melbourne, Florida. We have one son, Jeff, who lives in Houston, Texas. One daughter, Jennifer, married to Dan Duncan, also Northeastern Grad. They live in Eugene, Oregon. Needless to say, we travel a lot.

Both of our children graduated from Kenton Ridge. Jennifer and Dan have 3 precious boys, ages 10, 8, and 2 - Liam, Riley and Malcolm. We are very fortunate, as we do get to see them often. We recently brought the two older ones home with us from a trip out there. They wanted to travel in the motorhome, as they always fly when they come here. I can tell you, we had a wonderful time. WE wore THEM out everyday!

We welcome anyone who would like to visit us, we are in the Springfield phone book and also the Melbourne, FL phone book.

Looking forward to seeing everyone at the '57 Class Reunion.

Jerri Garlough Younkman

To my Class of 57 friends-I hope you have a wonderful reunion! I will not be able to join you, but I would like to say - ¡Hola! - from where I live in Guadalajara, México, where the aroma of tacos from street vendors pervades the air each evening. My path to México included a music degree at Ohio State University, followed by marriage to Chuck Younkman. We lived in Toledo, Ohio for two years, where Chuck served in the Agricultural Extension Service, and I taught music in the Lucas County schools.

We made the wonderful discovery of knowing Jesus Christ personally in the mid 60's, and God called us to work with Campus Crusade for Christ in California. Chuck worked in mass media and church consulting, and I helped with headquarters wives' activities while raising our four sons. I remained in California with Campus Crusade after Chuck was killed in an auto accident in 1992.

In 2002, God changed my calling to working the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Church, in México. I serve with the Operation GO project here, and for vacations I visit the various places where my four married sons and 10 grandchildren live. Architectural Treasures in Springfield

On a recent trip to Ohio, Susie Runyan Bauer visited two historical houses in Springfield - The Westcott House and Pennsylvania House. Links to the websites for these two attractions have been added to the Links to Other Websites list at the right side of the page. Susie highly recommends visits to these houses. She adds that "Mrs. Harenberg lived in an apartment at The Westcott House when she came to NE to teach. She was probably still Miss Varner at the time." Following is a brief description of both houses.

The Westcott House

The Westcott House Foundation was established in September 2000 to manage the restoration of Frank Lloyd Wright's only Prairie Style home in Ohio and to develop The Westcott House as a museum and educational center. The house, fully restored and hailed by many as a forgotten architectural treasure, opened to the public on October 15, 2005. The Westcott House is one of about 260 Wright houses remaining in the world with eleven located in Ohio. One of the Foundation's primary goals is to establish The Westcott House as a "must-see" destination for the benefit of community and state, architectural enthusiasts, and the general public.

With the restoration process now complete and the house open for tours, The Westcott House Foundation board and staff are focusing on the development of a vision and plan for the future that builds upon Frank Lloyd Wright's legacy and Springfield's rich heritage of industrial innovation. Partnering with leading experts in design and education, the Foundation envisions a Center of Excellence for Design and Innovation that will help reposition Southwestern Ohio as a source of creative talent and innovation.

Pennsylvania House

David Snively built the Federal-style Pennsylvania House in 1839 along the newly constructed National Road. This tavern and inn was an important stopover for livestock drovers and pioneers traveling by foot, on horseback, or in Conestoga wagons during the westward expansion of the United States in the nineteenth century. Dr. Isaac K. Funk, of Funk & Wagnalls fame, lived in the house in the 1840s while his father served as its tavern keeper. Closed as an inn after the Civil War, it then served as a doctor's clinic, boarding house, and secondhand shop before falling into total disrepair. The Lagonda Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution saved it from demolition and has owned and operated it as a museum since 1941. The Pennsylvania House was put on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.

Fred Shroyer

After high school, I worked where I could, that included area farmers. In the fall of '57, I worked for Dept. of Agriculture for several months. In 1960, I went to work for Hollandia Supply in South Vienna, that lasted for one year. On July 2, 1960, I married my high school sweetheart, Betty Spencer (Class of 1958). In 1962, I was drafted into the Army for two years. I took basic training at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri with Eldon Rust and Ronnie Williams. Later I went to Fort Riley, Kansas and Betty joined me there in the summer of 1962. I spent six months in Germany and returned to Fort Riley where I was stationed until I was discharged in January of 1964.

Betty and I returned back home and moved in on the farm where I grew up and we are still there. I farmed and worked in machine shops for 15 years. In 1964, Susan Beth was born and in 1968 Cynthia Lynn arrived. Both graduated from Northeastern. In 1979, I started as a Rural Carrier Sub at Springfield Post Office and became a regular carrier in 1981 and delivered on Route 10 most of my twenty years. We have been blest with four beautiful grandchildren. Stephanie Nicole 17 yrs. will be a senior at Northeastern this fall, Mackenzie Elaine 15 yrs. and a sophomore at Northeastern, Sarah Elizabeth 10 yrs. and in the sixth grade at South Vienna Middle School and Jacob Todd 14 yrs. and in the 8th grade in Hayesville, Kansas. We enjoy our grandchildren very much. They are into all sports and 4-H. Very active family.

I still farm and have been retired from the Post Office since July 1999. I do woodworking and collect 1/64 scale farm toys. I have several mowing jobs which includes two private clubs.

In 1958, Bob Braskett, Hugh Smith, David Deam, Lawrence Bostick, and myself, organized a car club which met at Hugh Smith's house. The Club name was Galaxie Customs and lasted several years until the Military Service and marriage demanded more time and dried up money we used to spend on our cars. Bob Braskett had a '57 Mercury, Hugh Smith had a '55 T-Bird, David Deam had a '53 Ford, Lawrence Bostick had a '57 Ford, and I had a '52 Ford.

Anita Harvey Selters

After graduation from Northeastern came college at Bob Jones University, Greenville, South Carolina, where I majored in music education and married my wonderful husband, Rex Selters. Further education took us to Atlanta, Georgia, for seminary, to Columbia University in New York City, and to Baylor University, Waco, Texas, for his Ph.D. in psychology. During those years I taught or typed, then pursued my own master's degree at Baylor. Our son George was born in Brooklyn and Dan later in Waco.

Growing up in Ohio, I never dreamed my adult life would be spent in Texas, but it has been a very good life. Rex has now retired from private practice as a psychologist and teaching at Baylor. I retired from public school music and supervising student teachers but continue directing the children's choir at church and "playing the organ at the Presbyterian Church" to quote the Statler's song, "Class of '57."

Five years ago we built a log cabin on a 215-acre ranch and thoroughly enjoy country living while still maintaining limited involvement in our careers. Son George is a financial planner living in Ruidoso, New Mexico, with wife Melissa and our granddaughter, Linday, and grandson Dane. Son Dan lives in nearby Fort Worth and works for Lockheed as an aerospace engineer. We enjoy visiting family, traveling on various cruises, and I have taken up quilting as another creative hobby along with my music and flowers. Rex and I just returned from his 50th high school reunion in Illinois and look forward to seeing all of you in Ohio in September.

More About John Dillon

The following is John's obituary that was published in the Clovis (New Mexico) News Journal.

John L. Dillon, age 68, of Clovis, NM died Sunday, July 29, 2007, at his home in Clovis. Born April 8, 1939, to Carmel James Dillon and Helen Arlene Hamilton Dillon in Springfield, OH. Married Rosa Margarita Natal April 6, 1963, in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He was a TSgt for the US Air Force for 21 years and a Carrier for the US Postal Service for 23 years. John was a member at Central Baptist Church and the Masonic Lodge in Plattsburg, NY. He loved fishing, bowling, woodworking, watching the grandkids, playing sports, coin collecting, and drinking coffee with his buddies.

John is survived by his wife Margarita Dillon of the home; two daughters, Karena Jo (Lance) Langan of Clovis, NM, and Deborah Joyce (Bill) Christian of Borger, TX; five grandchildren, Jonathan and Hanna Langan, and Kelsey, Kollin, and Britt Snipes; and two sisters, Bonnie Sue (Ray) Logan of Mechanicsburg, OH, and Beverly (Tom) Paradis of Ocala, FL five nieces and a nephew. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carmel and Helen Dillon.

Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, August 1, 2007, at Central Baptist Church with Rev. Dick Ross officiating. Burial will be at a later date at Lawn Haven Memorial Gardens. Honorary Pallbearers will be USPO Postal Carriers, Don Reid, Paul Matherly, Ryan Elliott, Albert Crespin, Paul Schoolcraft, and Dick Smith. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 1856, Clovis, NM 88101, or Plains Regional Home Healthcare and Hospice, 2217 Dillon St., Clovis, NM 88101.

In Memory of John Dillon

Dear Classmates,

John Dillon passed away on Sunday, July 29, 2007, after an extended illness. We extend deepest sympathy to John’s wife, Margarita, and his two daughters Karena and Deborah. John also is survived by several grandchildren.

I have known John since we were in the third grade together at Pleasant View Elementary School and easily remember times at play and much teasing during recess. John lived with his family of origin on a farm not far from the school (as I recall). Members of the class of ’57 may also remember John’s older sister, Bonnie, and younger sister, Beverly, who both went to Northeastern. I don’t remember if John had other siblings.

An earlier post in this blog dated June 19 provides more information about John and his family (see post below).

Thanks be to God for the life of John and the memories he leaves us.

Gone Fishin'

Well, not exactly, but the keepers of this class website (Jim and Susie) are going to be unavailable for a while in case someone wants to have information posted or is waiting for a reply to a message sent to the class email address. Susie and her husband will make the trek from California to Ohio for a wedding and a family reunion and won't be home until the end of July, while Jim and his wife will be in southern Africa viewing (hopefully) lots of wild animals and will return in early August. Jim promises to bring photos to the reunion in September if the lions and hippos don't get him.

• Son Nathan lives with us as he finishes undergraduate studies, and works at Safelite Glass Corp. as a Help Desk Analyst. He attends Ohio Dominican University, majoring in Theology and Philosophy.

Marcia Russell Roach

Hi "57" Grads. Here's the short version on what I've been up to the last 50 years.

After graduation I worked as a secretary in a Springfield business. I married and had two sons, Chris and Greg Robinson. I ultimately turned in my high heels and nice lunches for an apron and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. I was a stay-at-home mom for several years before returning to the work force. I had a long career in accounting. I retired from Wendy's International Corp. in the year 2000.

I married Bill Roach, another Charleston boy, in 1994. We have five sons between us. They have given us four grandchildren and one great grandchild. My youngest son Greg is deceased.

Bill and I are both retired but still work part time. We enjoy puttering around our garden and doing projects on our home in Galloway, Ohio. We travel to the beach every chance we get. We love the Buckeyes and watch all the O.S.U. basketball and football games. We also follow our grandson Bryan's college basketball games. We are hoping to see him play at Las Vegas this fall. Our oldest grandson, Pete, returned last year from serving in Iraq with the U.S. Marines. He is married with a son and a baby due in August 2007. One granddaughter, Brittany, is in college and our little one, Maya, is only four years old. Get ready for the photographs ...

Other than a few aches and pains we are relatively healthy. I am a cancer survivor and am thankful for every day.

I'm looking forward to seeing all of you at the class reunion in September. Till then, best wishes.

Class of '57 Event on Friday, Sep. 14

Our class reunion committee met last Sunday and did some planning for the event that will be held on Friday, September 14 for our class. The location is Locust Hills near South Charleston. Several other classes have met there and really liked it. We will meet at 5pm or 6pm (exact time to be announced later) with dinner at 7pm and the rest of the evening for visiting. The menu is a choice of lemon garlic chicken or beef medallions, served with green beans, scalloped potatoes, cole slaw and dessert. The cost will be $20 per person for the evening.

Reservation letters for both this event and the Classes of the 50's event at Northeastern the following night will be mailed sometime after August 6 and are to be returned by September 1. A map to Locust Hills will be included with these letters.

John Dillon

John Dillon and his wife Margarita were married in Puerto Rico in April, 1963, and they recently celebrated their 44th anniversary. They live in Clovis, New Mexico where they moved in 1976 with the Air Force. John retired from the Air Force in 1980 after 21 years and then went to work for the Postal Service, retiring from there after 23 years. Their older daughter lives in Clovis and has two children. Their younger daughter lives in Borger, Texas and has three children.

The photos shown here were taken in the Dillon back yard on May 5 of this year. Their daughters are Karena and Deborah.

John has had some serious health problems, including open heart surgery and esophageal cancer. He has recently learned that the cancer has spread to his bones. Please keep John and Margarita and their family in your thoughts and prayers.

Ralph Hewes

Four years at Case Institute of Technology in Cleveland, Ohio induced me to switch from thoughts of engineering to physics as a major, and introduced me to my future wife who was dating my roommate. Resolving never to go back to Cleveburg, I spent five years in grad school in the metropolis of Urbana/Champaign Illinois getting my PhD, marrying Judy Blood in 1962 who gave birth to our first son in 1965. Naturally, I took a job in Cleveland with GE initially doing research in their lighting business while Judy gave birth to our other two children and concentrated on them. I did a stint in engineering management there before we moved to Schenectady, NY in 1979 where I worked in GE's central R & D facility in management and doing advanced development, retiring in 1999. Judy began her career as teacher assistant in special education in 1985 and continued 1 more year before retiring in 2000. We have one grandchild each by our two oldest, while our youngest and his wife currently attend a cat, but look forward to children.

Most of the rest of the Hewes clan has moved to Albuquerque, NM, which we visit several times a year. We love to travel (Japan and Hawaii on GE in 1970, Grenada in 1973 and 2003, Cancun 1985, UK 1990, Ireland 1991, Tuscany 2005 plus visiting many US states),sail, and garden. Our children currently live in the NE (2 in MA, one in NH) so we plan to stay around here for a while.

Sally Collingsworth Peabody

Right out of high school I began working for Grant Weaver Insurance Company. I worked for three years then left to work for another insurance company. I married Howard Collingsworth when I was twenty-one. We attended Reid Junior High School. We have been married forty-seven years and have one son, Jeff. He has two children, Sarah sixteen, and Erik five.

Howard worked for Steel Products. I worked for Villa Springfield Nursing Home until an accident forced me into retirement. I have an artificial elbow due to the accident. Now I am a homemaker.

We attend The Seventh Day Advantist Church on Bird road where I play the organ. I do not sing anymore. I am grandmother to the young children that go to church there.

Ernie Neer

Ernie Neer has sent some information about his life during the past 50 years, and I'm happy to post it for all of you to read. I'm also posting photos of Ernie and his wife Jane that were taken in September 2005 when we were all in Ohio for the wedding of our shared nephew Steve Neer (my sister Marilou is married to Ernie's brother Harold, and Steve is their son). Here is what Ernie has to say:

Graduated from Northeastern in 1957, and from Ohio State in 1966. Served in the US Army from 1960 to 1963, stationed in Hanau Germany. I learned to speak German while there and took some German at Ohio State. I still speak German.

Cheryl Dippel and I were married in Nov. 1971 in Aurora, Ill. There are two daughters, both born in Richmond, VA. Lara Therese, born in May 1974, and Katherine Marie, born in Feb. 1978.

I was widowed in March of 1993 after a twelve year battle with cancer.

The thing of which I am most proud is our girls, they handled their mother's loss, and have gone on to be college graduates, with good jobs, and they are married to nice men. And I am a grandfather, Amanda Lucille, born Dec. 18, 2005, Craig and Kathy's little girl. (I like to call myself Opa, German for grandpa).

I was remarried to a Richmond girl, Miss Jane Terrell on Jan. 16, 1999. We've been married for eight years now and are doing just grand. We are both retired, and have done a fair amount of traveling.

I worked for Western Electric/Lucent in Chicago, North Carolina, and Richmond as an engineer, until 1996 when I retired from Lucent. The next work was with Viasystems here in Richmond until 2001, when I really retired.

Has It Really Been Fifty Years?

Boy how time flies. Here are a few of the things that have happened to me since leaving Northeastern.

After high school, I joined the Marine Corps and was able to spend time in the Far East and Southeast Asia. After leaving the Marine Corps, I became a member of the Springfield Police Division and at the same time completed a degree in Criminal Justice. I retired from the police division in 1989 and took a position as Director of Development at the Ohio Masonic Home, where I received an eye-opening education in non-profit fundraising. It was a refreshing change to have the opportunity to talk with people that wanted to talk and were being truthful.

In 1997, I returned to law enforcement by accepting a position with the Ohio Attorney General's Office and spent the next nine years investigating political corruption cases and cold case homicides around the state. I finally retired January 2006.

I met my wife, Rita, on a blind date in 1961 and we were married in 1962. We have three sons, Mike is a police officer, Eric works for a moving and storage company and Sean is a firefighter. We have five grandchildren, ranging in ages from 8 to 21, and we enjoy every opportunity to spoil them.

Rita owned a hair salon, in Springfield, for many years but is now semi-retired.

We are fortunate enough to spend our winters in southwest Florida but still maintain our home in Springfield.

We are looking forward to the reunion....yes, fifty years is a long time.

Ahhh, how the years have tip-toed away;

Old age has pounced upon us,

First with the deterioration of sight,

Then the disappearance of sounds,

What grave sin must we have committed

For our bodies to toy with our minds

Golden years? Where? When?

What a grievous injustice for man;

We have so much more to offer

But our lives are cut short.

Here are two photos of Janice Bumbalough Marler. One was taken in 1984 when Janice was a police officer. The other was taken about four years ago in what was then her computer room. Janice reports that she has lost quite a bit of weight in the four weeks since she had rotator cuff surgery.

About Me

I moved to NC in 1982 and pursued a career in law-enforcement. In the fall of 1983 I entered the police academy and graduated second in my class. Twenty-five began and only fifteen completed. I scored, in state, in the upper four. I guess we're never too old to realize our dreams. I worked for Enfield, NC for two years and moved on to Duke University. If you do the math you will figure out how old I was when I graduated. I only wish I had begun earlier.
It was during those years that I discovered I could write. Two years ago I was invited to write for My Walk With Jesus newspaper out of SC. Three years ago I was one of the authors in Bob
Casey's new book Wisdom from the Journey. I have been blessed. Perhaps one day there will be a book in store for me.

I love the south. I was born in Tennessee and migrated back to my southern roots in 1981. My husband passed away in 1987 at the age of 43. I remained unmarried.

I love working with young people and with my church family. I love to laugh and I love making others laugh. Thus the poem Life After Sixty Seven.

Susie Runyan Bauer

Greetings Classmates. Here's a little of my history from the last 50 years:

After graduating from OSU, I went to southern Ohio to teach school. Later I married, had two daughters and lived in Cincinnati until 1981. At that time my husband and I moved to California. We live in the greater Los Angeles area. Our town is Westlake Village which is adjacent to Thousand Oaks (in case you know the area.)

After moving to California I continued my education and now work in a liberal arts university as Director of Client Services (conduct computer training and manage the institution's Help Desk staff). As the world has changed, so has the work world. Would never have guessed in 1960 when I was a vocational home economics teacher in southern Ohio that I'd be teaching computer applications in California.

I guess you could say we are a "bi-coastal" family as my older daughter (Tara) lives in Florida where she works in sales and promotions, and my younger daughter (Bonnie) is a police officer in California.

My husband, Bernie, is from Wisconsin, but we met and married in Cincinnati. He is the principal in a lighting design firm. We both enjoy travel--especially international, but there are still 10 US states I have not yet visited and hope that I can see all 50 before being summoned to the "other side."

Bernie and I hope to attend the NE Class of '57 reunion in September. I hope to see you there.

Jim Schuttenberg

After graduating from Northeastern, I attended Ohio University for four years and graduated in 1961 with a degree in mathematics. I met my future wife Lynn while I was there, and we were married in 1963. Through the years I worked as a software engineer for General Electric, Honeywell, and Bull (a French company). We lived in Daytona Beach for the first seven years we were married and have been in Arizona since 1970. Lynn has worked as a high school teacher, sewing instructor, CPA and tax accountant, and head of Human Resources for a large national builder. I retired in 1999 and she followed in 2001. We've done a fair amount of traveling since retirement and like to go on cruises.

We have three children - Laurel in Denver, David in New York City, and Douglas in Mesa, Arizona. Laurel has three children, ages 10, 8, and 5, and David and his wife Tina have a baby daughter who was born last November. Doug and his wife Tiffany have a dog named Daphne that we like to keep occasionally.

The picture of Lynn and me that I've included here was taken on a Nile riverboat cruise that we took with Grand Circle Travel last March. During that trip we visited Israel, Egypt, and Jordan.

We hope to attend the class activities in Ohio in September, and I'm looking forward to renewing old acquaintances with many classmates. Susie Runyan Bauer and I have enjoyed getting this website up and running, and we hope many of you will decide to participate and share information about yourselves. A lot has happened since 1957!

Most people who participate at this level have some degree of Internet experience, although the Blogger website, on which this blog resides, has excellent Help files which explain many different aspects of the blog. I will be happy to issue a team member invitation to any class member who asks. The only requirement for a classmate to be a team member is to have an email address and to establish a free Google account.

Commenters: These people can look at posts that others have made and add comments, but they can't make posts themselves. Commenters do not have to be registered users of the blog.

Email Participants: These people are familiar with using email on the Internet, but they might not want to get involved with uploading pictures or making posts directly to the blog. If you'll email me information about yourselves and perhaps attach a recent photo, I'll see that it gets posted on the blog on your behalf.

Paper Participants: These folks would like to share some information about themselves on the blog, but the thought of entering it online or uploading photos is intimidating, and they'd rather not get involved to that extent. I would be more than happy to enter text and scan and upload photos for these classmates if they would like to send me the material through the mail. I'll even return photos if that is desired.

Browsers or Lurkers: These folks will look at the blog and read about their more active classmates who are contributing information and pictures, but they won't provide anything about themselves. While this is better than not participating at all, we encourage these classmates to share some interesting personal information.

We hope that you will choose to participate at some level and will share information about yourselves, so that when many of us meet in September, we will have renewed old acquaintances ahead of time.

Introduction

The Class of 1957 of Northeastern High School is celebrating its 50th anniversary during the year 2007. This blog has been established to provide a means for class members to communicate with one another prior to the special celebrations scheduled for September 14th and 15th.

Events are being planned by the 50th Reunion Planning Committee, which is composed of Bob Parks, Barbara Alexander Hughes, Carol Mercer, Judie Deering Hopper, Fred Shroyer, and Marcia Russell Roach.

This blog is being administered by Jim Schuttenberg, with assistance from Susie Runyan Bauer. We encourage our classmates to participate in the blog between now and September. We'd like to know what you have been doing for the past 50 years and what you look like now.
